Match report
Watford stun Preston with late turnaround at Vicarage Road
Watford came from behind to beat Preston 2-1 in a Championship fixture at Vicarage Road, overturning an early deficit with two second-half goals. The result lifted Dionisi's side while leaving Heckingbottom's Preston still searching for consistency near the bottom of the table.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Preston made the ideal start when Callum Lang struck inside five minutes to put the visitors 1-0 up, a lead they took into the interval. Watford needed until the 69th minute to respond, when Edouard Kayembe levelled the scores at 1-1, and the home side completed the reversal seven minutes later as Mamadou Doumbia, set up by Iker Bravo, made it 2-1.
Watford dominated territory throughout, with 61 percent of possession, though Preston were the more direct side in front of goal, registering 18 shots and six on target compared to Watford's 15 attempts and five on target. Preston also picked up both yellow cards shown in the match, while neither side saw a player sent off.
Lang gave Preston the perfect start with his fifth-minute goal, earning the top rating on the pitch at 8.2, though it was not enough to prevent defeat. Kayembe and Doumbia were not far behind, each scoring as Watford turned the match around.
Despite having 61 percent of the ball, Watford were outshot 18 to 15 by Preston, underlining how direct the visitors were on the counter.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Watford 41%, the draw 28%, Preston 31%. It finished Watford 2–1 Preston.
Level sides, home ground swings it, even this early in the season — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Watford's 41% is home ground and little else. The draw at 28% is what level sides usually produce.
Why Watford in front?
Home ground, and little else. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1345 to 1359. Sides this close won 43.1% of 15,951 home games (draw 26.7%, visitors 30.2%).
Why only 41%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Watford's column. Across 11,026 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.7% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. Championship home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (26.9% vs 24.9% norm). Championship homes won 43.0% of 8,415 games vs 44.9% across all 99,977 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why the draw at 28%?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.7%. These teams' recent games average 3.1 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 17,144. The goals environment takes 2.5 points off the draw. Championship runs draw-heavy, adding 2.0 points.
What did we measure but not count?
Watford have shed 61 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: sliding sides won 34.7% of 9,723 such games vs 34.6% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. Watford have rebuilt the eleven — fewer of last season's regular starters are still starting. Squad turnover reads dramatic but hasn't moved results once the rating is controlled: the busiest windows landed within noise across 5,368 games, rebuilt elevens likewise across 5,446, and even losing the most regular starters showed nothing (5,336).
