Preston in brief

Preston North End were founded as a football club in 1880, having begun as a cricket club in 1863, and represent the Lancashire city of Preston. Known as the Lilywhites, the team traditionally wear white shirts with blue shorts. Preston play at Deepdale, their home since 1875 and often described as football's oldest ground in continuous use by a league club.

A founder member of the Football League in 1888, Preston won the first two championships, in 1888-89 and 1889-90. The 1888-89 side, remembered as the Invincibles, went unbeaten in the league and the FA Cup and completed English football's first league and FA Cup Double without conceding a goal in the cup. Preston won a second FA Cup in 1938, beating Huddersfield Town 1-0, and have been second-tier champions three times, third-tier champions twice and fourth-tier champions in 1995-96.
