Rot-Weiß Essen dump St. Pauli out of DFB Pokal with second-half surge
Rot-Weiß Essen knocked FC St. Pauli out of the DFB Pokal Round of 64 with a 2-0 victory at Stadion an der Hafenstrasse. Marek Janssen put the hosts ahead in the 36th minute, finishing off a Marvin Obuz assist, and Essen carried that lead into the break.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
St. Pauli were unable to respond after the interval, and matters worsened seven minutes into the second half when Semir Telalović doubled the hosts' advantage, converting a Jannik Hofmann assist to make it 2-0. From that point Essen controlled the closing stages without further alarm, seeing out the win despite having less of the ball overall.
Essen managed just 40 percent possession but were far the more incisive side going forward, striking 15 times to St. Pauli's six and forcing five shots on target compared with a single one from the visitors. Referee Tobias Reichel booked one player from each side as St. Pauli's cup exit followed a run of results that had yielded little consistency.
Janssen scored the opener that set Essen on their way and finished with a rating of 7.7, the highest of any player on the pitch. Hofmann also contributed with the assist for Telalović's strike.
Essen's 15 shots to St. Pauli's six underlined how much more threatening the hosts were in front of goal despite seeing less of the ball.
