The second half turned into a rout. Igor Matanović struck in the 71st minute after being teed up by Derry Scherhant, and Lukas Kübler added a third just three minutes later to leave Düsseldorf reeling. Fabian Schleusener briefly gave the hosts hope with a goal in the 76th minute, assisted by Matthias Zimmermann, but the reply proved little more than a consolation.
Freiburg immediately restored their four-goal cushion when Jordy Makengo scored in the 80th minute off a Matanović assist, and the striker completed his brace deep into stoppage time, finishing from a Cyriaque Kalou Irié pass in the 90+4th minute to make it 5-1. The visitors dominated territory and chances throughout, finishing with 15 shots to Düsseldorf's four.
Igor Matanović capped a dominant display with a goal, an assist for Makengo's strike, and the top rating of the match at 7.9.
