Match report
Brighton storm back from two down to stun Manchester United
Manchester United's early dominance evaporated as Brighton fought back from two goals down to win 3-2 in this League Cup Round of 32 tie at Old Trafford. The result completed a remarkable turnaround for the visitors after they had trailed inside the opening ten minutes.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
United raced into a commanding position through S. Lacey in the 8th minute, assisted by Youri Tielemans, before Mason Mount doubled the lead just two minutes later. Brighton responded right before the interval when Charalampos Kostoulas, set up by Jaouen Hadjam, pulled one back in first-half stoppage time, leaving the hosts 2-1 ahead at the break.
The second half belonged entirely to Brighton. Pascal Groß levelled matters in the 65th minute with an assist from Luka Vušković, and Maxim De Cuyper completed the comeback four minutes later to put the away side 3-2 in front, a scoreline that held until full time.
Brighton's willingness to work without the ball proved decisive, as United held the greater share of possession at 42 percent yet were undone by their opponents' clinical finishing during the second-half surge.
Pascal Groß capped a man-of-the-match display with the equalising goal in the 65th minute, earning the highest rating on the pitch at 8.2 as Brighton's turnaround gathered pace.
Brighton were booked four times to United's none, reflecting the visitors' combative approach as they fought back from two goals down.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Manchester United 44%, the draw 25%, Brighton 31%. It finished Manchester United 2–3 Brighton.
Level sides, only home ground separates them — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Manchester United's 44% is home ground and little else. The draw at 25% is held down by a high-scoring environment.
Why Manchester United in front?
Home ground, and little else. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1978 to 1985. Sides this close won 43.1% of 16,000 home games (draw 26.7%, visitors 30.2%).
Why only 44%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Level sides split the rest: the draw at 25% and Brighton at 31%.
Why the draw at 25%?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.7%. These teams' recent games average 3.3 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 17,225. The goals environment takes 2.3 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
A 16-point possession gap between near-equal sides is unusual. Gaps this extreme are too rare to receipt — around 368 measured games, under our 300-game floor — so it's noted at 0 points. Manchester United played 3 competitive matches between 6–13 September 2026 (UTC dates). Brighton played 2 matches in the same 14-day window before kickoff. The busier schedule is worth watching.
