Guirassy double sends Dortmund past Villarreal in Champions League opener
Borussia Dortmund began their UEFA Champions League league-stage campaign with a 3-2 victory over Villarreal at Signal Iduna Park, in a contest that stayed goalless until the second half before bursting into life. Dortmund led at the interval by nothing, with the scoreline still blank at 0-0 heading into the break.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
The deadlock broke in the 53rd minute when Renato Veiga turned the ball into his own net to put the hosts ahead. Villarreal responded within the hour through Santiago Mouriño, whose finish was set up by Georges Mikautadze to level the match at 1-1 in the 66th minute. Dortmund then pulled clear late on as Serhou Guirassy struck twice, first assisted by Fábio Silva in the 80th minute and then from the penalty spot five minutes later, making it 3-1.
There was a final twist in stoppage time when Guirassy turned the ball into his own net at the other end, giving Villarreal a 3-2 scoreline that came too late to change the outcome. Dortmund controlled proceedings for long spells, edging possession and outshooting their visitors as the game opened up in the closing stages.
Guirassy scored twice, including a stoppage-time penalty, to finish with a rating of 7.39 and take the headlines despite later turning the ball into his own net.
Dortmund's 18 shots to Villarreal's 13 reflected their greater attacking threat over the course of the match.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Borussia Dortmund 54%, the draw 23%, Villarreal 23%. It finished Borussia Dortmund 3–2 Villarreal.
A slight rating edge to Borussia Dortmund, little else — Borussia Dortmund are a shade stronger on our strength rating, and Villarreal's hot finishing due to cool on top gives Borussia Dortmund the lean. The draw at 23% is held down by a high-scoring environment.
Why Borussia Dortmund at 54%?
Borussia Dortmund sit 86 points higher on our strength rating — 2001 to 1914. Sides with a 50–100-point rating edge at home won 50.5% of 10,442 such games. Villarreal scored +0.35 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Visitors running this hot went on to win 28.8% of 1,488 games, vs 29.1% for visitors finishing normally.
Why only 54%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 54% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 23% and Villarreal at 23%.
Why is the draw only 23%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 26.6%. These teams' recent games average 3.5 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 17,144. The goals environment takes 2.3 points off the draw. The cool-off factor takes 1.7 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last five: Borussia Dortmund W-L-W-W-W, Villarreal W-D-D-L-L — Borussia Dortmund are clearly the hotter side on recent results. Between equals, recent form told us almost nothing: the home side won 44.7% of 2202 games when clearly hotter and 42.8% of 4028 when clearly colder. Borussia Dortmund have played 3+ games in the last two weeks; their opponents haven't. Between equals, congested home sides won 46.9% of 2431 measured games and congested visitors 28.3% of 2486 — the cells disagree with each other and with the flat rest table, so schedule stays a watch item at 0 points.
