Profile
Declan Rice is an English midfielder who combines anticipation with the running power to cover large spaces. He steps across passing lanes to regain possession, then can advance the next attack by carrying the ball through midfield or passing beyond an opponent’s first line of pressure.
Born on 14 January 1999, Rice moved from Chelsea’s academy to West Ham United. He began as a defender and made his senior debut at the end of the 2016/17 season. A move into midfield under Manuel Pellegrini in 2018/19 became a defining step in his development.
His West Ham career culminated in European silverware. In June 2023 he captained the team to victory over Fiorentina in the UEFA Europa Conference League final in Prague. UEFA’s technical observers also named him the competition’s Player of the Season for 2022/23.
He joined Arsenal in July 2023. Two direct free-kicks against Real Madrid in April 2025 provided a striking demonstration of his shooting technique, helping Arsenal win the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final 3–0. UEFA’s observers also highlighted his movement between the lines and combinations with Gabriel Martinelli on the left.
His influence extends beyond those conspicuous moments. Premier League analysis of Arsenal’s September 2025 win at Newcastle described him recovering from ahead of his own defence to block Jacob Murphy’s shot, then repeatedly passing through midfield pressure. The combination explains how he can contribute high up the pitch and still help protect the space behind him.
In 2025/26 he helped Arsenal win the Premier League. That season also brought a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, which Arsenal lost on penalties after a 1–1 draw in Budapest.
After representing the Republic of Ireland in senior friendlies, Rice chose England and made his debut in March 2019. He subsequently played in the teams that reached the EURO 2020 and EURO 2024 finals. At the 2026 World Cup, he captained England in their third-place match against France, scoring and providing an assist in a 6–4 victory on 18 July.
Declan Rice currently plays for Arsenal as a defensive midfielder. He has represented England internationally.
