Why this comparison
Arsenal bid for Moisés Caicedo first. In January 2023 they bid £60m and then £70m, the Guardian reported, and Brighton turned both down, the second after Caicedo had asked in public to be allowed to go; Arsenal signed Jorginho on deadline day and, the paper wrote, would still go for Declan Rice in the summer. Rice joined them from West Ham on 15 July for £100m plus £5m in add-ons, the most paid for a British player, and Brighton then held out for a similar fee, citing Rice's and Chelsea's £106.8m for Enzo Fernández as the benchmark. Liverpool had a bid of about £110m accepted in August, but Caicedo waited for Chelsea, who signed him on 14 August in a deal worth up to £115m, then a British record.
The comparison was loudest in autumn 2025. Gary Neville called Caicedo the best midfielder in the league, Jamie Carragher said Rice would just pip him, and before the clubs met on 30 November Rice said he had voted for Caicedo in his PFA Team of the Year. Since then their clubs have gone different ways: Arsenal won the league in 2026 and Rice was nominated for the Ballon d'Or, while Chelsea finished tenth after parting with two head coaches, and Caicedo had played 86 minutes of 2026–27 by 11 October.

Have they played each other?
They had faced each other in ten competitive games by 9 October 2026, all of them in the live list below; they have never been in the same team or met in a friendly, and England and Ecuador have not played each other in their careers. The first three were Brighton against West Ham, and Caicedo's Brighton won all three, 9–1 on aggregate, starting on the last day of the 2021–22 season in his eighth Premier League game; the first of those eight had been a 2–1 win at Arsenal in April 2022. Since the two moved to London, Rice's Arsenal have not lost to Caicedo's Chelsea in seven meetings, winning four and drawing three. Rice scored the only goal either has managed in the ten, at Stamford Bridge in October 2023, when a poor pass out by the goalkeeper Robert Sánchez let him shoot into an empty net from about 30 yards with Arsenal 2–0 down; Leandro Trossard equalised seven minutes later. He set up three more: Trossard's opener in the 5–0 at the Emirates in April 2024, Kai Havertz's winner in the seventh minute of stoppage time of the League Cup semi-final second leg in February 2026, a 1–0 win that completed a 4–2 aggregate victory, and Jurriën Timber's winning header from a corner in March 2026. On 30 November 2025 Caicedo was sent off after 38 minutes at Stamford Bridge, when the referee, Anthony Taylor, upgraded a yellow card to red after a VAR review of his challenge on Mikel Merino; Chelsea scored first with ten men and the game ended 1–1. "I think the whole talk this week of Rice vs Caicedo maybe got to him," Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports that evening. Two Arsenal–Chelsea games are missing from the list because Caicedo did not play in them. Caicedo was suspended for the first leg of the semi-final, in January 2026, after two League Cup bookings, and injured when Arsenal beat Chelsea 2–1 on 6 September 2026; Rice set up a goal in both. As of 9 October 2026 the clubs are next due to meet at Stamford Bridge on 13 March 2027, a date television can still move. Chelsea have no European football in 2026–27, so an earlier meeting would need a League Cup draw from the quarter-finals or an FA Cup draw from the third round in January.

What the numbers don't show
The rows on the card measure their jobs as much as the players. In our line-up records for the two years to 9 October 2026, about three quarters of Caicedo's minutes were in defensive midfield and three fifths of Rice's in central midfield, with almost all the rest of his, 43 starts' worth, in defensive midfield. Over the two years and in each full season, Caicedo's lead in tackles and interceptions and Rice's in chances created and assists are what those roles ask for. In the 2025–26 league season Caicedo's 59 interceptions were the most in the Premier League, level with Everton's James Garner, and Rice's 58 chances created were the fifth-most.
Set pieces lift Rice's creative rows. He took 95 Premier League corners in 2025–26 and 108 the season before, and by late November 2025 the Premier League's Adrian Clarke counted 11 of the 21 chances Rice had created that league season as coming from set pieces. The 2025/26 figures on the card, 5,350 minutes for Rice and 4,579 for Caicedo, take in the 2026 World Cup: seven games for Rice, whose England finished third, and four for Caicedo, whose Ecuador went out to Mexico in the round of 32. The card also can't show the dugouts behind them. Rice has had one head coach at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta. Caicedo has had five in just over three years at Chelsea, counting the interim Calum McFarlane, and three of them in 2025–26 alone: Enzo Maresca left on New Year's Day, McFarlane stood in briefly before Liam Rosenior took over, and when Rosenior was sacked in April McFarlane took charge again until the summer.

Questions fans ask
Who is better, Caicedo or Rice?
This page leaves that call to the card at the top, which works it out from the window you choose, and the rows it names say as much about their jobs as about them. Pundits split. On Sky Sports in October 2025 Neville said Caicedo was the best midfielder in the league at that moment, while Carragher said that as an all-round midfielder Rice would just pip him, with an extra bit of quality on the ball. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's head coach then, said in November 2025 that Caicedo and Rodri were, at that moment, the two best defensive midfielders in the world. Rice was Arsenal's player of the season in 2024–25 and 2025–26 and in the PFA's Premier League team of the year for 2025–26; Caicedo was voted Chelsea's player of the season by supporters and by his team-mates in 2024–25. In club finals Caicedo won the Conference League in 2025, scoring the fourth goal against Real Betis, and the Club World Cup that summer; Rice won the Conference League as West Ham's captain in 2023, his last game for the club, and the Premier League with Arsenal in 2026. Rice was on the 2026 Ballon d'Or shortlist of 30 published on 8 September 2026, and Caicedo was not. The winner is due to be named on 26 October 2026.
Caicedo vs Rice stats: who made more tackles and who created more in 2025–26?
Caicedo made more tackles and interceptions and Rice created more chances, in the Premier League's own count for the 2025–26 league season. Caicedo made 87 tackles and 59 interceptions in 2,802 minutes; Rice made 70 and 37 in 3,099. Rice created 58 chances and Caicedo 17. Rice scored four league goals and set up five; Caicedo scored three and set up one. Caicedo was booked 11 times and sent off once, Rice booked three times. Outside the league, Rice's one goal came in the Champions League, as Arsenal reached the final, which they lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in May 2026, with Rice scoring his kick in the shoot-out; Caicedo scored twice in the Champions League and started the FA Cup final, which Chelsea lost 1–0 to Manchester City.
Do Rice and Caicedo play the same position?
Not quite, by their own account. Before the clubs met in November 2025 Rice told CBS Sports: "He's a full-blown No 6, while I'm more of a box-to-box No 8." Caicedo told the Daily Mail the same week that "we play in different positions". Rice was West Ham's holding midfielder and played that role in his first Arsenal season too, and Arsenal described him in June 2026 as operating in front of the back four or behind the front line, with a threat from set pieces. Caicedo has been Chelsea's holding midfielder, and under Maresca he sometimes started at right-back in an inverted full-back role, moving into midfield. Rice has filled in at right-back too, most memorably for England against DR Congo in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, 12 minutes he called probably the hardest of the game.
Have Rice and Caicedo played against each other?
Yes, ten times by 9 October 2026: nine in the Premier League and the League Cup semi-final second leg of February 2026. Rice's teams won four, drew three and lost three. Caicedo's Brighton beat Rice's West Ham in all three of their meetings, and Rice's Arsenal have not lost any of their seven against Caicedo's Chelsea. Rice scored once and set up three goals in the ten; Caicedo had no goal or assist and was sent off once. Rice played 867 minutes of those games and Caicedo 837.
Why did Arsenal sign Rice and not Caicedo?
They bid for both in 2023, Caicedo first. Sky Sports' Dharmesh Sheth reported in July 2023 that Arsenal had pursued Caicedo more strongly than Rice in January, with a last bid worth around £70m, but that Brighton said he was not for sale, and that Rice then became their main target for the summer. Arteta said in January 2023 that he would not comment on any player until a deal was done, and Arsenal's announcement of Rice did not mention Caicedo. Arsenal paid West Ham £100m plus £5m in add-ons after Manchester City had a £90m bid rejected, the Guardian reported. Asked about Arsenal, Caicedo told the Daily Mail in November 2025 that he "almost did it", adding: "But now I'm here and I'm so happy. The timing was good." Of the summer of 2023, when Liverpool had a bid accepted, he said: "I waited until Chelsea came for me."
Why has Caicedo hardly played in 2026–27?
Injury. A calf problem kept him out of Chelsea's first two games of 2026–27; he came on against Brighton on 30 August, went off injured 14 minutes later and missed the next four games, among them Arsenal's 2–1 win on 6 September. Xabi Alonso, Chelsea's head coach since July 2026, said after the Brighton game that he hoped it was not a new injury and after the Arsenal game that "we took him too early"; two days later he described "a little issue" in Caicedo's calf, the same one that had kept him out before Brighton. Until then Caicedo had rarely been hurt: he started all 38 of Chelsea's league games in 2024–25. He returned on 10 October, starting the 5–1 win over Bournemouth and playing 72 minutes, so by 11 October 2026 he had played 86 minutes in two of Chelsea's eight competitive games. Rice started each of Arsenal's first five league games of 2026–27, withdrew from England's squad for the four Nations League games between 26 September and 6 October, and started again on 10 October against Leeds.
