Profile
Son Heung-Min is a South Korean forward who combines runs behind the defence with finishing on either foot. Comfortable starting wide or playing through the middle, he can attack a pass behind the back line and shoot without first moving the ball onto one favoured side.
Born on 8 July 1992 in Chuncheon, he moved to Hamburg in 2008. He scored on his Bundesliga debut against Cologne in October 2010, lifting the ball over the goalkeeper after running onto a pass. His 12 league goals in 2012/13 marked a further step forward.
He joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2013 and helped the club finish in the Bundesliga’s top four in both of his seasons there. Tottenham Hotspur signed him in August 2015. In 2018/19, his goals in the Champions League knockout rounds helped Spurs reach their first final in the competition.
His solo run against Burnley in December 2019 earned the 2020 FIFA Puskás Award. A different achievement followed in 2021/22: 23 league goals brought a share of the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah, making Son the first Asian player to win it.
For South Korea, he won Asian Games gold in 2018. At the 2022 World Cup, he supplied the pass for Hwang Hee-chan’s late winner against Portugal, helping secure a place in the last 16. South Korea’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended in the group stage.
Appointed Tottenham captain in 2023, Son lifted the Europa League trophy in May 2025. He joined Los Angeles FC that August, moving to Major League Soccer after a decade at Spurs.
From a wide starting position, Son uses his movement to reach central scoring areas. Premier League analysis of Tottenham’s April 2023 win over Brighton highlighted how quick forward passes found Son and Harry Kane beyond midfield or behind the defence. Son’s repeated sprints make that space useful, bringing him into positions to finish or create for a teammate.
Son Heung-Min currently plays for Los Angeles FC as a forward. He has represented South Korea internationally.
