Profile
Moisés Caicedo is an Ecuadorian midfielder whose defensive work extends beyond the centre of the pitch. He steps forward to intercept passes and moves towards the touchlines to help team-mates. After winning possession, he can carry the ball through pressure or find a forward pass that starts an attack.
Raised in Santo Domingo, he played youth football with Espoli before joining Independiente del Valle. His senior debut came in October 2019. In 2020, he captained Independiente to the Under-20 Copa Libertadores title, beating a River Plate team containing his future Chelsea team-mate Enzo Fernández in the final.
He moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in February 2021, then spent the first half of 2021/22 on loan at Beerschot in Belgium. Brighton recalled him in January 2022. By 2022/23, he was helping the club finish sixth in the Premier League and won its Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards.
Chelsea signed him in August 2023. He received the club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards for 2024/25. In May 2025, he scored the last goal in the 4–1 Conference League final win over Real Betis; he also started the 3–0 Club World Cup final victory against Paris Saint-Germain that July.
Caicedo made his senior Ecuador debut in 2020 and appeared at his first World Cup in 2022. At the 2026 tournament, he captained Ecuador in their last-32 match against Mexico, playing the full game as a 2–0 defeat ended their campaign.
His passing helps explain why he offers more than ball recovery. Premier League analysis in November 2024 highlighted through-balls behind West Ham and Liverpool that set up Nicolas Jackson, alongside his ability to advance with a dribble. He can turn a defensive contribution into a direct route towards goal.
His covering role was particularly clear against LAFC at the 2025 Club World Cup. FIFA’s technical study showed him moving across to protect the space left by Marc Cucurella’s forward runs. Together with Roméo Lavia, he pressured the ball after possession was lost, slowing the counterattack. That work gave attacking team-mates room to move while preserving protection behind them.
Moisés Caicedo currently plays for Chelsea as a defensive midfielder. He has represented Ecuador internationally.
