Profile
Rodri is a Spanish holding midfielder who helps his team turn possession into progress. Before receiving, he checks the space around him and opens his body towards the opposition goal. That preparation allows him to play forward quickly, finding teammates beyond the first line of pressure.
Born in Madrid on 22 June 1996, he developed in Atlético Madrid’s academy before moving to Villarreal in 2013. He made his first-team debut there in December 2015. His ability to interrupt attacks and then use the ball constructively helped establish him in senior football; Atlético brought him back in 2018.
Manchester City signed him in July 2019. Under Pep Guardiola, he became the deep midfield link in a side built around controlling possession. In the 2022/23 Champions League, John Stones frequently stepped out of defence to join him, giving City another player through whom to build attacks.
His defining goal came in the 2023 Champions League final against Inter. After helping recover possession earlier in the move, he arrived from deep to meet Bernardo Silva’s cutback and finish first time. The only goal of the final secured City’s first Champions League title and completed their treble.
With Spain, he won EURO 2024 and was named Player of the Tournament, forming a central midfield partnership with Fabián Ruiz. In October that year, he received the men’s Ballon d’Or after a season that also brought City a fourth successive Premier League title.
He added a World Cup title in July 2026, when Spain beat Argentina 1–0 after extra time in the final, and received the tournament’s Golden Ball. In August 2026, he joined Barcelona from Manchester City.
His influence can be visible even when someone else makes the pass. UEFA’s analysis of Spain’s EURO 2024 quarter-final against Germany showed him drawing İlkay Gündoğan away to open a route forward for Aymeric Laporte. Moving a marker creates space for another player: it is another way Rodri can help a team work through pressure.
Rodri currently plays for Barcelona as a defensive midfielder. He has represented Spain internationally.
