Profile
Raphinha is a Brazilian forward whose movement can be as damaging as his work on the ball. He attacks space behind defenders, arrives inside the penalty area from wide positions and can draw opponents away from a teammate. Those runs make him both a finishing threat and a creator of openings.
Born in Porto Alegre on 14 December 1996, he developed in Avaí’s youth system before moving to Portugal with Vitória de Guimarães. Sporting CP followed in 2018, then Rennes in 2019 and Leeds United in 2020.
At Leeds, one defining contribution came on the final day of the 2021/22 Premier League season. He won and converted a penalty away to Brentford before Jack Harrison’s late goal secured a 2–1 victory. Leeds finished above the relegation places, giving his two seasons in England a decisive final chapter.
He joined Barcelona in July 2022 and helped win LaLiga in his first season. In 2024/25, Barcelona won the league, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup. His 13 Champions League goals also made him that competition’s joint leading scorer with Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy.
Further decisive moments followed in 2026. He scored twice against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final on 11 January, including the winner in a 3–2 victory, and received the final’s man-of-the-match award. Barcelona also won the 2025/26 league title.
Raphinha made his senior Brazil debut against Venezuela on 7 October 2021 and played at the 2022 World Cup. He returned to the tournament in 2026, appearing in the group games against Morocco and Haiti; Brazil’s campaign ended against Norway in the round of 16.
UEFA’s analysis of Barcelona’s April 2025 win over Dortmund shows what his running achieves. He combined with Pedri before bursting through the inside-left channel and cutting the ball back. On another attack, his sprint drew defenders away from Robert Lewandowski. He can therefore influence a move without receiving its final pass: the defender following him may leave the space another forward needs.
Raphinha currently plays for Barcelona as a left winger. He has represented Brazil internationally.
