Profile
Vinícius Júnior is a Brazilian forward who makes a defender’s choice difficult. From the left, he can accelerate past an opponent towards the byline or cut inside towards goal. His speed with the ball makes protecting one route an invitation to attack the other.
Born in São Gonçalo, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, on 12 July 2000, he developed in Flamengo’s youth system before entering the first team in 2017. He moved to Real Madrid in 2018.
His 2021/22 season established him as a decisive scorer and creator in Europe. He formed a productive partnership with Karim Benzema and scored the only goal of the Champions League final against Liverpool, meeting Federico Valverde’s delivery at the far post. UEFA named him the competition’s Young Player of the Season.
Two years later he scored in another winning Champions League final, against Borussia Dortmund. Six goals across the 2023/24 campaign helped earn him UEFA’s Player of the Season award. In December 2024, he also received The Best FIFA Men’s Player award.
With Brazil at the 2026 World Cup, he scored four times in the group stage, including twice against Scotland. Brazil advanced through the round of 32, but their tournament ended with a 2–1 defeat by Norway in the last 16, a match he played throughout.
His October 2024 hat-trick against Dortmund showed how his dribbling creates those choices. UEFA’s analysis described him carrying the ball at speed while Kylian Mbappé occupied another defender. With Niklas Süle positioned to protect the outside, Vinícius cut inside and drove a low shot past the goalkeeper.
He also threatens without carrying the ball. In March 2026, UEFA highlighted his runs behind Manchester City’s defence and the way his first touch and curved running path directed him towards goal. Together, those movements and his one-against-one dribbling explain why he can stretch a defence both before receiving a pass and after it arrives.
Vinícius Júnior currently plays for Real Madrid as a left winger. He has represented Brazil internationally.
