Profile
Career & playing style
Vladimír Coufal is a right-back whose attacking contribution comes from repeated running, open-play crosses into the box and passes that lead to shots. The role also asks him to defend the last line while offering an option high up the pitch. His game links those duties: he has to cover ground in both directions, then make decisions with the ball after arriving in an advanced area.
His route to that role was gradual. After youth football at Baník Ostrava, he played in the Czech second tier for Hlučín and Opava, then moved to Slovan Liberec in 2012. He became Liberec captain and an established top-flight defender. Slavia Prague signed him in June 2018, taking a player whose running and experience in European competition already formed part of his appeal.
At Slavia, Coufal became a regular on the right of a side that won the Czech league and cup in 2018/19, then retained the league title in 2019/20. He also played through the club's Champions League group-stage campaign against Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Inter. The Slavia years combined regular right-back duty with matches against high-profile European opposition.
He moved to West Ham United in October 2020, joining fellow Czech international Tomáš Souček. His West Ham years took that role into the Premier League and European competition. A defining moment came in Prague on 7 June 2023: Coufal started West Ham's 2-1 Europa Conference League final win over Fiorentina.
Hoffenheim signed him in August 2025. During the 2025/26 Bundesliga season he started all 34 league matches and supplied eight assists as the club qualified for the Europa League. League analysis also described his frequent open-play crosses into the box and passes that led to shots. His workload stretched the other way too, with repeated sprints and defensive duties on the right.
For Czechia, Coufal made his senior international debut in 2017. He was part of the 2026 World Cup side and started the group-stage draw with South Africa. Czechia ultimately took one point from their three games and went out in the group stage. It was a different setting for the same right-sided work that had carried him through three club leagues.
