Profile
Said El Mala is a German winger whose most recognisable move starts on the left: he runs at the defender, shifts inside and attacks the goal with his preferred right foot. His pace makes him particularly dangerous when play opens up, turning a wide starting position into a direct route towards the penalty area.
There is more variety behind that familiar pattern. UEFA’s technical observers at the 2025 Under-19 European Championship highlighted his ability to dribble and finish with either foot, and to choose between a shot and a pass after beating the full-back. When Germany attacked down the opposite side, he also found space inside the box, adding a threat away from the ball.
His development took a less direct route. After leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach’s youth system in 2021, he continued through TSV Meerbusch and Viktoria Köln. He made his senior debut for Viktoria in the third division in February 2024, progressing from youth football to matches against experienced professionals.
In June 2024, 1. FC Köln signed El Mala alongside his older brother Malek, then loaned both players back to Viktoria for the following season. Said’s breakthrough there brought the 2024/25 3. Liga Newcomer of the Season award, chosen by the division’s coaches and captains.
He carried that progress into international youth football. At the 2025 Under-19 European Championship, El Mala scored four goals to finish joint-top scorer at the finals as Germany reached the semi-finals. He was also selected in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament, where the observers praised the decisions he made after taking on opponents.
His first competitive appearance for Köln came in the German Cup against Jahn Regensburg on 17 August 2025. Two weeks later, he scored his first goal for the club in a 4–1 Bundesliga win over Freiburg. The step up preserved the directness of his game: running at defenders and looking for a finish remained central to his attacking contribution.
Germany first called him into their senior squad in November 2025. His first appearance followed on 1 October 2026, when he came on at half-time in a 2–0 Nations League win over Serbia.
