Profile
Career & playing style
Sebastiano Esposito is a forward who looks for space across the attack rather than staying fixed between the centre-backs. In a 2026 interview, he described moving from the opposition box towards the centre circle, sometimes starting left of centre, to receive the ball and create chances. That gives him two routes into an attack: combine with a teammate after drawing a defender out, or turn towards goal himself. Cagliari has described him as capable of playing both centrally and behind another striker.
He came through Brescia’s youth system before joining Inter in 2014. In March 2019, still in his teens, he made his senior debut against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League. That spring he also helped Italy reach the European Under-17 final. Italy lost to the Netherlands, while UEFA’s technical observers selected Esposito as the forward in their team of the tournament, singling out his set-piece play.
His first Serie A start for Inter came against Genoa on 21 December 2019. When Inter won a penalty, Romelu Lukaku gave him the ball; Esposito scored. It was an early glimpse of his finishing nerve, though one moment did not define the rest of his path. He subsequently spent time with SPAL and Venezia, sharing in Venezia’s promotion to Serie A, before spells at Basel, Anderlecht, Bari and Sampdoria.
Empoli brought him back to Serie A in 2024. In January 2025, he scored against Inter at San Siro while playing for Empoli, a reminder that his career had moved beyond the club that developed him. He returned to Inter for the 2025 Club World Cup and then joined Cagliari in August. At Cagliari, he described his roaming role in his own words: seeking the ball, trying difficult passes and helping to defend.
He joined Sassuolo on loan from Cagliari in August 2026. Italy then gave him his first senior call-up for that September’s Nations League games. Selection became participation when he started alongside his brother Francesco Pio against Türkiye on 28 September; FIGC recorded them as the fourth pair of brothers to play together for the senior national team. For Esposito, the thread from youth tournaments to that night is his willingness to join play away from the penalty area while remaining a goal threat.
