Profile
Kevin De Bruyne is a Belgian midfielder who combines the range of a playmaker with the running power to advance an attack himself. His game connects midfield possession with chances near goal, whether he supplies a teammate or takes the shot.
Born on 28 June 1991, De Bruyne made his senior debut for Genk in May 2009 and helped them win the 2010/11 Belgian league title. Chelsea signed him in 2012, but his route to regular football included a loan at Werder Bremen before a permanent move to Wolfsburg in January 2014.
Germany gave his career a decisive breakthrough. In 2014/15, he helped Wolfsburg finish second in the Bundesliga and win the German Cup, scoring in the final against Borussia Dortmund. He was subsequently named Germany’s Footballer of the Year before joining Manchester City in 2015.
At City, his chance creation became a defining part of the team. His 20 Premier League assists in 2019/20 equalled Thierry Henry’s single-season record, and he was named the league’s Player of the Season. Those assists were accompanied by 13 league goals, showing the scoring threat alongside his passing.
Across his ten seasons at City, he won six Premier League titles. The 2022/23 season brought the treble of league, FA Cup and Champions League, with De Bruyne supplying chances for Erling Haaland. He joined Napoli in July 2025, beginning another chapter after that sustained period of success in England.
With Belgium, he scored in the 2-1 quarter-final victory over Brazil at the 2018 World Cup and helped the team finish third. He also played in the 2026 quarter-final against Spain, which Belgium lost 2-1.
What distinguishes his creativity is the variety of positions from which it works. Premier League tactical analysis highlighted his ability to select a pass while running on the counterattack, and his ability to bend crosses around defenders with either foot while playing as a central midfielder. That combination lets him create both when a game opens up and when his team already has possession near the penalty area.
Kevin De Bruyne currently plays for Napoli as an attacking midfielder. He has represented Belgium internationally.
