Why this comparison

Neymar was 19 when he faced Messi in a final for the first time, the 2011 Club World Cup in Yokohama, where Barcelona beat his Santos 4–0 and Messi scored twice. Eighteen months later he joined Barcelona, saying at his presentation on 3 June 2013 that he had come to help Messi go on being the best player in the world. With Luis Suárez from 2014 they formed the front three known as MSN, which scored 122 goals in 2014/15 and 131 in 2015/16. Neymar left for PSG in August 2017 for a world-record €222m, and Messi joined him in Paris four years later for two more seasons.

Neymar finished third for the Ballon d'Or in 2015 and 2017, when Messi was first and second. He is Brazil's record scorer, with 80 goals in 130 games, but a torn knee ligament in October 2023 and injuries since have cut his minutes; his last goal for Brazil came in the 2–1 defeat by Norway that knocked them out of the 2026 World Cup, after which he said his time with the national team was over. Messi finished with 126 goals in 208 games for Argentina and plays on for Inter Miami; Neymar has been back at Santos, his boyhood club, since January 2025.

Have they played each other?

On 2 November 2026 our records have none of their games as opponents, so the list below shows only their games as team-mates. They have faced each other six times. Argentina beat Brazil 1–0 in a friendly in Doha in November 2010, with a stoppage-time goal from Messi, and Barcelona beat Neymar's Santos 4–0 in the Club World Cup final in December 2011. Argentina won another friendly 4–3 in New Jersey in June 2012, when Messi scored a hat-trick; Brazil won 2–0 in Beijing in October 2014, when he had a penalty saved, and 3–0 in a World Cup qualifier in Belo Horizonte in November 2016, with a goal from Neymar. The last was the 2021 Copa América final at the Maracanã, which Argentina won 1–0. Messi's side won four of the six, and he scored six goals in them to Neymar's one. Both also started the qualifier in São Paulo on 5 September 2021 that was halted after a few minutes when Brazil's health officials walked on to the pitch; it was never finished or replayed. As team-mates the list has 115 games, but for Barcelona it starts in August 2015 and holds only La Liga and Champions League games, so it lacks their first two seasons there and every Barcelona cup game. Sports Illustrated counted 206 games together in October 2025, 161 of them for Barcelona.

What the numbers don't show

Both play in leagues that run from early in the year to December, so the card's seasons are calendar years. On 2 November 2026 its 2025 figures are Inter Miami's 2025 MLS season and Leagues Cup games for Messi and Santos's 2025 league and Copa do Brasil games for Neymar, each with his official games for his country from September 2025 to the 2026 World Cup; Neymar played too few minutes in that window for the card to name a leader on it. Over the two years to 2 November 2026 Messi played 7,484 minutes in 87 games and Neymar 3,202 in 43. On 2 November 2026 the card counts only the Brazilian league and the Copa do Brasil for Santos, because our data does not cover the São Paulo state championship or the Copa Sudamericana, so it holds fewer of Neymar's games than he played: Lance! counted 27 games for him in 2026 on 25 October, where the card had 20 on 2 November.

The card does not adjust for the strength of a league, and over two years it sets MLS against Brazil's top division. In the two years to 2 November 2026 penalties make up 2 of Messi's 74 goals and 6 of Neymar's 17. Of the four rows the card judges it calls them level on one, chances created, at 2.9 per 90 minutes each, which puts both in the top 2% of forwards in our data; Neymar also won more duels per 90 minutes in those two years, 6.8 to Messi's 5.2.

Questions fans ask

How many goals did Messi, Suárez and Neymar score together at Barcelona?

FC Barcelona counts 363 in the three seasons the trio played together, from 2014/15 to 2016/17, with 122 in the first and 131 in the second; some outlets give 364, counting one more in the last. Neymar's best season for goals at Barcelona was 2014/15, with 39, and he left with 105 goals in 186 games for the club, by Opta's count. The 2015 treble was the peak: Neymar scored the last goal of the Champions League final against Juventus in Berlin on 6 June, in stoppage time, and he and Messi both scored in the Copa del Rey finals of 2015 and 2017; in the 2016 final Messi set up both of Barcelona's goals, the second for Neymar. Opta counted 22 of Messi's goals set up by Neymar in their Barcelona years, more than by any other team-mate, and 20 the other way. Then there was the 6–1 against PSG on 8 March 2017, when Barcelona became the first team to overturn a 4–0 first-leg defeat in the Champions League: Messi scored a penalty Neymar had won, and Neymar scored twice from the 88th minute and lifted the pass for Sergi Roberto's winner.

Why did Neymar leave Barcelona?

On 3 August 2017 his representatives paid the €222m release clause in his contract, more than twice the €105m Manchester United had paid for Paul Pogba a year earlier. At his presentation in Paris the next day Neymar said he had wanted a new challenge, and that if he had been following the money he would be playing for a team in another country. Messi had said goodbye on 2 August, the day before the clause was paid, in a video on Instagram, writing that it had been a huge pleasure to share all those years with him. Two years later, in September 2019, Messi said he would have loved Neymar to return and was not sure Barcelona had done everything they could to bring him back. In January 2025, on Romário's podcast, Neymar said he had not left Barcelona to become the best player in the world but for other, personal reasons, adding that the money was of course much better than at Barcelona; in his last week there, he said, Messi had asked him why he was leaving and told him he would make him the best in the world.

How did Messi and Neymar do together at PSG?

They won three trophies together in Paris: Ligue 1 in 2021–22 and 2022–23, and the 2022 Trophée des Champions, a 4–0 win over Nantes in Tel Aviv in which Neymar scored twice and Messi once. In Europe PSG went out in the last 16 both times, to Real Madrid in March 2022, when a Karim Benzema hat-trick turned the tie, and to Bayern Munich in March 2023, when Neymar missed the second leg with an ankle injury. Neymar had welcomed Messi in August 2021 with a video of their Barcelona years, captioned "back together"; when Messi left in June 2023, Neymar wrote to him that it had not turned out as they had planned, but that they had tried everything. In an interview recorded in June 2023 and shown by TV Globo that September, after he too had left, for Al-Hilal, Neymar said Messi had been to heaven with Argentina and lived through hell in Paris, and that both of them had.

Are Messi and Neymar friends?

Both say so. Neymar called Messi his idol in 2018 and, in 2020, the best player in history of those he had seen play. After losing the 2021 Copa América final to him, Neymar wrote that he had gone to hug the greatest and best he had seen play, his friend and brother, and told him to enjoy the title; TyC Sports filmed the two of them sitting together with Leandro Paredes on some steps in a corridor of the Maracanã after that final. When Neymar tore his knee ligament in October 2023 Messi posted "Mucha fuerza" ("Lots of strength") to him, and in May 2026, asked about Neymar before the World Cup, he said he could not be objective because Neymar was a friend, and that Neymar, whatever his condition, would always be one of the best players a World Cup wants; they had not spoken for a while, he added, but still talked from time to time. On the day of Messi's farewell game for Argentina, 6 October 2026, Neymar thanked him for making him love football even more and wrote that it had been an honour to play against him, and more of one to make history at his side.

What have Messi and Neymar won?

Together they won 11 trophies in their six seasons, by Sports Illustrated's count: two La Liga titles, three Copas del Rey, the 2015 Champions League, the Club World Cup and the Supercopa de España at Barcelona, and two Ligue 1 titles and a Trophée des Champions at PSG; Barcelona's 2015 UEFA Super Cup and 2016 Supercopa came while Neymar was out, with mumps and then at the Rio Olympics. Messi's total reached 48 in September 2026 with the Campeones Cup, won with Inter Miami, by MLS's count; it includes the 2022 World Cup, the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, four Champions Leagues and the 2025 MLS Cup, and he has won the Ballon d'Or eight times and MLS's Most Valuable Player award in 2024 and 2025. Neymar's include the 2011 Copa Libertadores with Santos, five French league titles with PSG and the 2023–24 Saudi Pro League title with Al-Hilal, for whom injuries, above all the torn knee ligament, limited him to seven games in all, and, with Brazil, the 2013 Confederations Cup and Olympic gold in 2016. He did not win the World Cup or the Copa América, in which his best finish was the 2021 final, and his best Ballon d'Or place is third.

Will Messi and Neymar play together again?

By 2 November 2026 nothing had been agreed. In January 2025 Neymar told CNN that playing with Messi and Suárez again would be incredible, but Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami's coach at the time, said days later that under MLS salary-cap rules it was impossible for the club even to think about him. Messi's contract with Inter Miami runs to the end of the 2028 MLS season, and Neymar's with Santos is due to end on 31 December 2026; in February 2026 Neymar said he might want to retire when December came. Both have retired from international football, so they are not expected to meet as opponents for their countries again, and no game between Santos and Inter Miami has been announced.
