Why this comparison
In 2025–26 each was named player of the season in his own league. Olise scored 15 goals and set up 19 in the Bundesliga, the most assists in the division and two short of Thomas Müller's single-season record of 21. Yamal scored 16 in LaLiga and set up 11 on ESPN's count, or 12 on the league's own, although he missed ten of Barcelona's 38 league games. Both were then nominated for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, with the winner due to be named in London on 26 October: a third nomination for Yamal, eighth in 2024 and second in 2025, and a second for Olise, who was 30th in 2025.
They arrived by opposite routes, five years and seven months apart. Yamal made his Barcelona debut at 15 and reached his 19th birthday, on 13 July 2026, with 151 first-team games for the club, three league titles and EURO 2024 behind him; six days later he was a world champion. Olise spent his 19th birthday, in December 2020, playing for Reading in the Championship, England's second tier. He made his Premier League debut for Crystal Palace the following September, joined Bayern Munich in July 2024 and won his first France cap that September, at 22.

Have they played each other?
By the start of October 2026 they had faced each other three times, once for their clubs and twice for their countries, and Yamal's side had won every time. All three games are in the list below, and both started each one. In Barcelona's 4–1 win over Bayern in October 2024, Yamal set up the goal that completed Raphinha's hat-trick, and Olise was taken off on the hour. In Stuttgart in June 2025, Yamal scored twice in Spain's 5–4 Nations League semi-final win, the first a penalty for a foul on him, and was UEFA's player of the match; Olise, playing in the centre of France's attacking midfield, went off at 4–1 down, and France's three late goals came after he had gone. At the 2026 World Cup, a day after Yamal turned 19, a foul on him brought the penalty that put Spain ahead in the semi-final. Olise, who arrived with five assists in the tournament, did not have a shot and was replaced after 72 minutes of a 2–0 defeat. Across the three games Yamal has two goals and one assist, and Olise none of either. Two other France–Spain games come up in the comparison, but neither was a meeting: Olise had not yet been capped when Spain won the EURO 2024 semi-final, and Yamal was not in Spain's squad for the Paris 2024 Olympic final, an under-23 game in which Olise played all 120 minutes. No further meeting was fixed at the start of October 2026. The Champions League draw kept Bayern and Barcelona apart in the league phase, and France and Spain were in different Nations League groups, so the earliest chance is a knockout round in 2027.

What the numbers don't show
Both are left-footed, start on the right and come inside, but the emphasis differs: Yamal leans harder on the dribble and Olise on the delivery. UEFA had them first and second for dribbles in the 2025–26 Champions League, 117 for Yamal in 874 minutes and 93 for Olise in 1,081, while Olise put in 64 crosses to Yamal's 33 and took 34 corners to 11.
An assist is a shared number: a team-mate has to finish the chance, and someone has to decide what counts. Five of Olise's seven World Cup assists were for Kylian Mbappé, the tournament's top scorer, and in the 2025–26 Champions League UEFA credited him with eight where ESPN's data gave six.
Penalties are a difference that a goals column hides. Yamal is one of Barcelona's penalty takers, and six of his 22 goals in LaLiga and the Champions League in 2025–26 came from the spot. Harry Kane takes Bayern's, and none of Olise's 20 goals in the Bundesliga and the Champions League that season was a penalty.
Nor have they always played the same position. In the line-ups we hold from October 2024 to September 2026, Yamal is on the right wing for 95% of his minutes and Olise for 75%, with most of the rest as a central attacking midfielder. Didier Deschamps used him there in six of France's eight World Cup games, the semi-final against Spain among them.
Fitness separates them too. Transfermarkt's injury record shows nothing for Olise in his first two seasons at Bayern, where he played 66 of 68 Bundesliga games. It lists 8 games missed for Yamal in 2024–25 and 17 in 2025–26, the last eight after he tore a hamstring while scoring a penalty against Celta Vigo on 22 April 2026. He was back for the World Cup, and began it on the bench.
