Why this comparison
The 2025 Ballon d'Or finished with these two first and second. At the ceremony in Paris on 22 September 2025, Dembélé won with 1,380 points to Yamal's 1,059, and 73 of the 100 jurors ranked him first, against 11 for Yamal. Yamal, then 18, won the Kopa Trophy for the best young player for the second year running and congratulated Dembélé the next day. Both are among the 30 nominees for 2026, with the ceremony in London on 26 October, six days after PSG host Barcelona in the Champions League.
They reached that shortlist by different routes. Barcelona signed Dembélé from Borussia Dortmund in August 2017 for €105m plus add-ons to replace Neymar, but injuries marked his six seasons there: Transfermarkt counts 298 days out in 2019–20 alone. He joined PSG on 12 August 2023, and in December 2024 Luis Enrique moved him from the right wing to centre-forward; the Guardian counted 25 goals in 20 games from December to March. Yamal came through Barcelona's academy to a first-team debut at 15, the EURO 2024 title at 17 and the 2026 World Cup at 19. In September 2026 both wore No 10 for their clubs.

Have they played each other?
By September 2026 they had met five times in competitive matches, and Yamal's side had won four. All five are in the list below. In Spain's 5–4 win over France in the Nations League semi-final on 5 June 2025, played in Stuttgart, Yamal scored twice, the first from a penalty he won himself. Dembélé's two goals in their meetings both came against Barcelona, his former club, in the 2024 Champions League quarter-final that PSG won 6–4 on aggregate. Spain also beat France in the EURO 2024 semi-final, where Yamal scored at 16, and the 2026 World Cup semi-final, where he won the penalty for the opening goal. Dembélé was injured when PSG won 2–1 in Barcelona on 1 October 2025. As team-mates they played one competitive game: Yamal's debut, a 4–0 win over Real Betis on 29 April 2023, when both came on as substitutes. The next PSG–Barcelona match was set for 20 October 2026 at the Parc des Princes.

What the numbers don't show
When UEFA's technical observers named Dembélé the 2024–25 Champions League player of the season, they pointed to his pressing from the front and to how he dropped deep to give PSG superiority in midfield, work that a goals-and-assists line doesn't record. PSG list him as two-footed, as Barcelona did when they signed him, and his first-half hat-trick against Norway at the 2026 World Cup came from one right-footed and two left-footed finishes. Our line-up data reflects the move inside: in September 2026 it had about three-quarters of the minutes we hold for him at centre-forward.
Yamal is left-footed and plays on the right, where our line-up data puts almost all of his minutes. His threat often starts with a dribble: at EURO 2024 UEFA credited him with 32 dribbles and 4 assists, both the most at the tournament, and Opta Analyst described Saudi Arabia's defenders at the 2026 World Cup second-guessing whether he would go inside or outside. Two of Spain's goals against France began with fouls on him: the 2025 Nations League penalty he scored himself, and the 2026 World Cup semi-final penalty Mikel Oyarzabal converted, which no stats line counts as an assist.
Availability shapes both records. Transfermarkt lists Dembélé missing 19 games through injury or illness in 2025–26 and Yamal 17, and both clubs publicly criticised the national teams over the same international week in September 2025: PSG said France had not followed its medical advice before Dembélé's hamstring injury, and Hansi Flick said Yamal had played for Spain through groin pain on painkillers. Rates per 90 minutes can hide how often a player was on the pitch, which is why the card above shows each player's minutes.

Questions fans ask
Did Dembélé and Yamal play together at Barcelona?
Once in a competitive match. On 29 April 2023, Dembélé came on for Raphinha after 73 minutes of Barcelona's 4–0 win over Real Betis, and Yamal replaced Gavi ten minutes later, aged 15 years, 9 months and 16 days. Who is better, Dembélé or Yamal?
This page doesn't pick one: the verdict at the top comes from the numbers in the window you choose. What the numbers can't settle is the kind of forward you want: Dembélé works through the middle and presses from the front, while Yamal starts wide and beats players to create. The last two big votes, the 2025 Ballon d'Or and FIFA's The Best, both went to Dembélé; the 2026 Ballon d'Or result was due on 26 October.
Why did Dembélé win the 2025 Ballon d'Or ahead of Yamal?
The 2025 award covered August 2024 to July 2025, when Dembélé won the Champions League, Ligue 1 and the French Cup with PSG, took Ligue 1's top-scorer award with 21 goals and was named the Champions League's player of the season. Yamal won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona over the same months. The jury's margin was wide: 321 points, which Maxifoot set against the 41 that separated Rodri and Vinícius Júnior in 2024. Yamal had finished eighth in 2024; Dembélé had never been on the shortlist before 2025.
What have Dembélé and Yamal won?
By September 2026 Dembélé's biggest team titles were the 2018 World Cup with France, two Champions Leagues and three Ligue 1 titles with PSG, and three LaLiga titles with Barcelona; his individual awards included the 2025 Ballon d'Or, FIFA's The Best for 2025 and Ligue 1's player of the year for 2024–25 and 2025–26. Yamal's were EURO 2024 and the 2026 World Cup with Spain and three LaLiga titles with Barcelona, the first after a single appearance in 2022–23, a title in both lists. He won the Kopa Trophy in 2024 and 2025 and LaLiga's player of the season award for 2025–26. Both have domestic cups and super cups besides.
Are Dembélé and Yamal friends?
Their public exchanges have been mostly warm. Yamal congratulated Dembélé on Instagram the day after the 2025 ceremony, and Dembélé, at his press conference after winning, said that if the planets aligned Yamal would go on to win the Ballon d'Or. In September 2026 Dembélé named Kvaratskhelia, Kane and Mbappé as his top three for the next award, mentioning Yamal among other contenders. Asked about it at a Barcelona press conference, Yamal said Dembélé was Mbappé's friend and that it did not matter to him, pointed out that he had won when he faced the two of them, and said he got on very well with Dembélé.
How old and how tall are Dembélé and Yamal?
Dembélé was born in Vernon, in Normandy, on 15 May 1997, and Yamal in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona, on 13 July 2007, so Dembélé is just over ten years older. PSG and Barcelona both list them at 1.78 m.
