Overview

Watford in brief

Watford trace their roots to Watford Rovers, formed in 1881, and took their present form in 1898 when West Herts and Watford St Mary's merged. The Hertfordshire club have played at Vicarage Road since 1922. Known as the Hornets, a name chosen by supporters when the club switched to gold and black in 1959, Watford have worn yellow, black and red since 1976.

Watford's league titles include the Third Division in 1968-69 and the Second Division, then the third tier, in 1997-98, as well as the Fourth Division in 1977-78 and the Southern League in 1914-15. The defining era came under manager Graham Taylor, with Elton John as chairman, when the club rose from the Fourth Division to the First Division, finished runners-up to Liverpool in 1982-83, played in the 1983-84 UEFA Cup and reached the 1984 FA Cup final, losing to Everton. A second FA Cup final followed in 2019.
