Overview

Bristol City in brief

Founded in 1894 as Bristol South End, Bristol City took their present name when they turned professional in 1897. The club have played at Ashton Gate in south Bristol since 1904. Ashton Gate had been the home of local rivals Bedminster, with whom City merged in 1900. Known as the Robins, City play in red and white.

Bristol City won the Second Division in 1905-06 and finished runners-up in the First Division the following season, still the highest league placing in the club's history. They reached the 1909 FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Manchester United, and spent a second spell in the top flight from 1976 to 1980. Their league titles also include three Third Division South championships and the 2014-15 League One title, while cup successes include the 1934 Welsh Cup, the 1978 Anglo-Scottish Cup and three Football League Trophy wins.
