Overview

Charlton in brief

Founded in 1905 by a group of teenagers in East Street, Charlton Athletic represent Charlton in south-east London. The club have played at The Valley since 1919, apart from a season at The Mount in Catford in 1923-24 and an exile at Selhurst Park and then Upton Park from 1985 until December 1992. Charlton play in red and white and are best known as the Addicks, a nickname linked to a local fishmonger who rewarded the team with haddock and chips.

Charlton's greatest era came under manager Jimmy Seed, whose side climbed from the Third Division South to finish second in the First Division in 1936-37, then reached consecutive FA Cup finals and won the trophy in 1947. The club have won three third-tier titles, in 1929, 1935 and 2012, and the second tier in 2000. Alan Curbishley, in charge from 1991 to 2006 and jointly with Steve Gritt until 1995, led them back to the top flight through the 1998 play-offs and that 2000 title.
