Overview

Albacete in brief

Albacete Balompie trace their founding to 1 June 1939, when the club was formed as Albacete Foot-ball Association after a merger following the Spanish Civil War, although LaLiga dates the club's origins to 1 August 1940. Pressure to use Spanish names brought the present name in 1941. Known as the Alba and dressed in white, the club play at the Estadio Carlos Belmonte, opened on 9 September 1960 and named after the mayor who drove its construction.

Albacete reached La Liga for the first time on 9 June 1991 as Segunda Division champions, with the side coached by Benito Floro and led by Jose Luis Zalazar that became known as the Queso Mecanico. Seventh place in 1991-92 remains the club's best finish, and a Copa del Rey semi-final followed in 1994-95. In all Albacete have spent seven seasons in the top flight, the last in 2004-05, and they have topped their Segunda Division B group three times, taking the overall title in 2014.
