Overview

1. FC Magdeburg in brief

1. FC Magdeburg were founded in December 1965, when the football department of the sports club SC Magdeburg, formerly SC Aufbau Magdeburg, became a club of its own. Its roots run through earlier works and neighbourhood sides such as BSG Stahl and Motor Mitte. The club play in blue and white, and since December 2006 have played at the stadium in the Bruckfeld district, called MDCC-Arena from 2009 and Avnet Arena since 1 July 2024. In everyday use it is also known as the Heinz-Krugel-Stadion, after the former coach.

Under coach Heinz Krugel, Magdeburg won the DDR-Oberliga in 1972, 1974 and 1975, and on 8 May 1974 beat AC Milan 2-0 in Rotterdam to win the European Cup Winners' Cup, the only European trophy won by an East German club. They won seven FDGB-Pokal finals, the first two as SC Aufbau. After reunification came years in the lower leagues, then 3. Liga titles in 2017-18 and 2021-22, each bringing promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.
