Overview
Dynamo Dresden in brief
Dynamo Dresden were founded on 12 April 1953 at the Schauburg cinema in Dresden as a club of East Germany's police sports association. Their roots lie in a police side formed in 1948, which played as SV Deutsche Volkspolizei Dresden from 1950. The club were 1. FC Dynamo Dresden from 1990 to 2007 and play in yellow and black, the city colours. Home is the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, opened in 1923 and rebuilt from 2007 to 2009; after years under sponsors' names, a fan vote restored its old name in 2018.
Dynamo won eight East German league titles between 1953 and 1990, five of them in the 1970s under coach Walter Fritzsch, and the FDGB-Pokal seven times, counting a 1952 win by the police predecessor. Their best European run was the 1988-89 UEFA Cup, beating Roma before losing the semi-final to VfB Stuttgart. After four Bundesliga seasons from 1991, the club were refused a licence over debts in 1995. They won the 3. Liga in 2016 and 2021 and returned to the 2. Bundesliga in May 2025.

Hans-Jurgen Kreische, four times the East German league's top scorer, was the first Dynamo player named East German Footballer of the Year, in 1973; defender Hans-Jurgen Dorner won the award three times from 1977 and made 96 official appearances for East Germany. Ulf Kirsten and Matthias Sammer left for Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart in 1990. Relations with BFC Dynamo are particularly fractious: its forerunner took over Dresden's team and top-flight place in 1954. Lok Leipzig were traditionally the main rivals within Saxony, alongside Chemnitzer FC and Erzgebirge Aue.
