Overview

Palermo in brief

Palermo date their history to 1 November 1900, when the Anglo-Palermitan Athletic and Foot-Ball Club was founded with the help of the city's English community and Ignazio Majo Pagano, who had learned the game in England. In 1907 the club became Palermo Foot-Ball Club and swapped red and blue for pink and black, colours suggested by Count Giuseppe Airoldi as those "of the bitter and the sweet". Home is the Stadio Renzo Barbera, opened in 1932 and named after the former chairman in 2002.

Palermo have won Serie B five times, in 1931-32, 1947-48, 1967-68, 2003-04 and 2013-14, the last with a record-breaking 86 points. The 2004 title ended a 31-year wait for Serie A and opened the club's best era. In all Palermo have played 29 top-flight seasons and five European campaigns in the UEFA Cup and Europa League, and lost Coppa Italia finals in 1974, 1979 and 2011. They also won the Coppa Italia Serie C in 1993.
