AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Walid Cheddira broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, converting from an assist by Raffaele Russo to put the home side in front. Palermo responded almost immediately, with Dennis Johnsen levelling matters in the 63rd minute after being teed up by Joel Pohjanpalo, and the score stayed at 1-1 through to the final whistle.
Avellino had the better of the shooting statistics, registering 15 attempts to Palermo's nine and putting five on target compared with the visitors' two, despite seeing less of the ball at 47 percent possession. Palermo, who arrived unbeaten in their previous five outings, remain second in the table on 10 points, while Avellino sit fifth on seven after four rounds.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Avellino 18%, the draw 35%, Palermo 47%. It finished Avellino 1–1 Palermo.
Palermo's rating gap, but the draw is in play — Palermo are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and a weak Serie B home advantage plus the early-season home fade on top give Palermo the lean. The draw at 35% is helped by a draw-heavy league.
Why Palermo at 47%?
Palermo sit 236 points higher on our strength rating — 1415 to 1651. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge on the road won 52.0% of 6,084 such games. Serie B home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (32.2% vs 24.9% norm) and away wins (26.1% vs 30.2%). Serie B homes won 41.7% of 4,050 games vs 44.9% across all 100,162 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Avellino's column. Across 11,115 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.6% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 22–27–51.
Why only 47%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 47% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 35% and Avellino at 18%.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Avellino win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.0%. These teams' recent games average 2.7 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,820. Serie B runs draw-heavy, adding 7.3 points. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last 4 between them: Avellino 0 wins, 1 draw, Palermo 3 wins. Most recently Palermo 2–0 Avellino, 5 months ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 28.1% of 5635 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points. Last five: Avellino L-L-W-W, Palermo W-W-W-W-W — Palermo are clearly the hotter side on recent results, and unbeaten in their last 6 in all competitions (6 wins), a run going back to May 2026. Between equals, recent form told us almost nothing: the home side won 44.7% of 2208 games when clearly hotter and 42.7% of 4033 when clearly colder. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
