Overview

Grenoble in brief

Grenoble's football club was founded on 1 September 1911 as FC Grenoble and went through several names before becoming Olympique Grenoble Isere in 1993. The present club, Grenoble Foot 38, was formed in 1997 when the city backed a merger of Olympique Grenoble Isere and Norcap, and it counts the 1911 history as its own. Known as GF38 and playing in blue and white, the club moved from the Stade Lesdiguieres to the new Stade des Alpes in February 2008.

Grenoble won the second division in 1960 and 1962, but both promotions ended in relegation after a single season. Back in the top flight in 2008 after 45 years away, they finished 13th in 2008-09 and went down in 2010. In July 2011 the professional club was liquidated and demoted to the fifth tier. A CFA 2 group win in 2011-12 and the CFA title in 2016-17 followed, and a play-off win over Bourg-en-Bresse returned Grenoble to Ligue 2 on 27 May 2018.
