Overview

Academico Viseu in brief

Academico de Viseu trace their history to 7 June 1914, when Sport Clube Academico was founded in Viseu, in central Portugal. Renamed Clube Academico de Futebol in 1927, the club was always best known simply as Academico de Viseu. Home matches are played at the Estadio Municipal do Fontelo, and the team are known as Os Viriatos, after Viriathus, the Lusitanian leader traditionally associated with the Viseu area.

The original club played four seasons in the Portuguese top flight, the last in 1988-89, and finished runner-up in the second-tier Segunda Divisao in 1987-88. Financial problems ended that club's senior football in the mid-2000s. In 2005 a protocol with GD Farminhao created Academico de Viseu Futebol Clube, which took on the old club's name, colours and badge and moved to the Fontelo.
