Overview

Piast Gliwice in brief

Piast Gliwice are a football club from Gliwice in Upper Silesia, southern Poland. The club was founded on 18 June 1945 by Poles who had been forced to leave their homes in the former eastern territories annexed by the Soviet Union, and it takes its name from the Piast dynasty, which ruled Poland until 1370 and Gliwice itself until 1532. The crest is based on the city's coat of arms and its Piast eagle. Piast play in blue and red, are nicknamed Piastunki, and play at the Piotr Wieczorek Municipal Stadium (Stadion Miejski im. Piotra Wieczorka) on Okrzei Street, rebuilt and reopened in 2011.

Piast spent much of their history in the second tier and reached the Polish Cup final in 1978 and 1983, losing both times. After financial trouble in the 1990s the club was rebuilt from the seventh tier, winning four consecutive promotions between 1997 and 2001, and reached the Ekstraklasa for the first time in 2008. Relegated in 2010, they returned as I liga champions in 2012. Piast finished second in 2015-16 and won their first Polish championship in 2018-19. Their best European run came in the 2020-21 Europa League, when wins over Dinamo Minsk and Hartberg took them to the third qualifying round, where they lost to Copenhagen.
