Overview

OFI in brief

OFI were founded in Heraklion, Crete, in 1925 by a group of local athletes who trained together. The name is an acronym of Omilos Filathlon Irakliou, or Heraklion Sportsmen Club. The club has worn black and white since its foundation; black is a traditional colour worn by Cretan men. For decades OFI played at the Theodoros Vardinogiannis Stadium, opened in 1951 and known as "Yedi Kule". From 2025-26 the club moved to the larger Pankritio Stadium, a 2004 Olympic football venue, because the old ground could no longer be licensed for safety reasons.

OFI reached the top flight in 1968, were relegated in 1971 and returned in 1976. Under Dutch coach Eugene Gerards (1985-2000) they were runners-up in 1985-86, won the Greek Cup in 1987 and the Balkans Cup in 1989, and knocked out Slavia Prague and Atletico Madrid in the 1993-94 UEFA Cup. Relegated in 2009, the club withdrew from professional football with heavy debts in 2015, then climbed back to the top flight by 2018. OFI beat PAOK 3-2 after extra time in the 2026 Greek Cup final, won a first Greek Super Cup that August and reached the 2026-27 Europa League league phase.
