Overview

Internacional in brief

Internacional were founded in Porto Alegre on 4 April 1909 by the Poppe brothers, Henrique, Jose Eduardo and Luiz Madeira, who had moved from Sao Paulo and found the city's main clubs closed to players without German roots. They created a club open to all and named it after Internacional of Sao Paulo, a club they had belonged to. The colours are red and white, and fans are known as Colorados. Home is the Beira-Rio, officially the Estadio Jose Pinheiro Borda.

The Rolo Compressor team of the 1940s won eight state titles in nine years, and Inter later took eight Campeonato Gaucho titles in a row from 1969 to 1976. They were Brazilian champions in 1975, 1976 and 1979, the last without losing a match, and won the Copa do Brasil in 1992. The peak came in 2006: the Copa Libertadores and then the FIFA Club World Cup, won 1-0 against Barcelona in Yokohama with an 82nd-minute goal from Adriano Gabiru. A second Libertadores followed in 2010.
