Overview

Cruzeiro in brief

Cruzeiro were founded in Belo Horizonte on 2 January 1921 by members of the city's Italian community as Societa Sportiva Palestra Italia, playing in the green, white and red of the Italian flag. During the Second World War, rules against names linked to the Axis powers forced a change, and in October 1942 the club became Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, after the Southern Cross, switching to blue and white. A fox mascot gives the nickname Raposa. Home since 1965 has been the Mineirao, officially the Estadio Governador Magalhaes Pinto.

The CBF counts four Brasileirao titles for Cruzeiro: the 1966 Taca Brasil, won with 6-2 and 3-2 wins over Santos in the final, and the league in 2003, 2013 and 2014. The 2003 side won the league, the Copa do Brasil and the Campeonato Mineiro in the same season. Cruzeiro hold the record of six Copas do Brasil (1993, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2017 and 2018) and have won the Copa Libertadores twice, in 1976 and 1997, as well as the Supercopa Libertadores in 1991 and 1992 and the 1998 Recopa.
