Overview

Atlanta United FC in brief

Atlanta United were founded on 16 April 2014, when MLS awarded an expansion team to Arthur Blank, owner of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, and began play in 2017 as the league's 22nd club. The name, picked after a survey of supporters, and the crest were unveiled in July 2015; five black and red stripes behind the central "A", repeated on the first home shirt, explain the nickname the Five Stripes. After starting at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium, the team moved into Mercedes-Benz Stadium, shared with the Falcons, in September 2017.

Coached by Gerardo "Tata" Martino, Atlanta reached the playoffs in their first season and won MLS Cup in their second, beating Portland Timbers 2-0 on 8 December 2018 in front of 73,019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, then the largest crowd for a stand-alone MLS match. It was the city's first major professional title since the Braves won the 1995 World Series. In 2019, under Frank de Boer, the club added the U.S. Open Cup, beating Minnesota United 2-1 in the final, and the Campeones Cup against Club America.
