Overview

Sporting Kansas City in brief

Sporting Kansas City were founded on 6 June 1995 as one of Major League Soccer's ten charter members, with Lamar Hunt as owner, and began play in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz. The name became Kansas City Wizards after the first season and Sporting Kansas City after the 2010 season. The team played at Arrowhead Stadium and then CommunityAmerica Ballpark before moving in 2011 to its own stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, which opened as Livestrong Sporting Park and has been Children's Mercy Park since 2015.

The Wizards won the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup in 2000, beating Chicago Fire 1-0 in the final, with goalkeeper Tony Meola named MVP of both the league and the final. A second MLS Cup came in 2013 at home against Real Salt Lake: 1-1 after extra time, then a 7-6 win in a ten-round shootout, played in freezing temperatures. The club has also won the U.S. Open Cup four times, in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017, and lost the 2024 final to LAFC.
