Overview
CF Montreal in brief
CF Montreal trace their history to December 1992, when the Saputo family founded the Montreal Impact for the 1993 season of the American Professional Soccer League; the name works in both English and French. MLS named Montreal its 19th club in May 2010, and the Impact, keeping their name and history, joined the league in 2012. The club became Club de Foot Montreal in 2021; after supporter protests, a blue fleur-de-lis crest was unveiled in 2022 and worn from 2023. Home is Stade Saputo, opened in 2008, and the Olympic Stadium has hosted bigger matches.
Before MLS the Impact won the 1994 APSL title in only their second season, the 2004 A-League and the 2009 USL First Division, as well as the first Canadian Championship in 2008. Four more Canadian titles followed, in 2013, 2014, 2019 and 2021. In 2015 Montreal became the first Canadian club to reach the CONCACAF Champions League final, losing 5-3 on aggregate to Club America, and the first leg of the 2016 Eastern Conference final against Toronto FC drew 61,004 to the Olympic Stadium.
