Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Seattle Sounders 72%, the draw 19%, CF Montreal 9%. It finished Seattle Sounders 1–1 CF Montreal.
Seattle's strength gap makes this one-sided — We give Seattle Sounders 72% mainly because they sit 181 points higher on our strength rating, 1507 to 1326, and home sides in Major League Soccer tend to do better than the global norm. The draw sits at 19%, close to the usual rate for a gap this size, nudged slightly lower because both teams' recent games average 3.0 goals.
Why Seattle Sounders at 72%?
Seattle Sounders sit 181 points higher on our strength rating — 1507 to 1326. Sides with a 160–240-point rating edge at home won 66.8% of 6,583 such games. Major League Soccer home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (25.7% vs 30.0%). Major League Soccer homes won 49.2% of 5,237 games vs 44.6% across all 101,264 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. The 300 most similar past games finished 61–23–16.
Why not higher?
No scored evidence points the other way. 72% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 19% and CF Montreal at 9%.
Why is the draw only 19%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 19.9%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.8% of 25,198.
What did we measure but not count?
Out: Paul Rothrock, an important player. This does not change our forecast yet: we are still measuring how much missing players like these cost a team. Out: Prince-Osei Owusu, a star player, Brayan Ceballos, a rotation player, and Thomas Gillier, on a provisional rating. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
