Overview

FC Thun in brief

FC Thun was founded on 1 May 1898 in Thun, a town in the Bernese Oberland in the canton of Bern. The club's colours are red and white. From 1945 to 2011 its home was the Stadion Lachen, which did not meet UEFA requirements, so the 2005-06 Champions League home games were played at the Stadion Wankdorf in Bern. A privately financed 10,000-capacity ground, Arena Thun, opened on 9 July 2011. It was renamed Stockhorn Arena in 2014 and Visana Stadion in May 2026.

First promoted to the Nationalliga A in 1954, they went straight back down but reached the 1955 Swiss Cup final, losing 3-1 to La Chaux-de-Fonds, and dropped to the third tier in 1970. Under Hanspeter Latour they returned to the top flight in 2002 after 47 years away, finished second in 2004-05 and reached the 2005-06 Champions League group stage. After second-tier titles in 2009-10 and 2024-25, Thun won the 2025-26 Swiss Super League as a promoted side, sealing their first league title on 3 May 2026.
