Overview

Gornik Zabrze in brief

Gornik Zabrze are a football club from Zabrze, an industrial city in Upper Silesia in southern Poland. They were founded on 14 December 1948, when several local clubs, among them KS Zjednoczenie, KS Pogon, KS Skra and KS Concordia, were merged on the initiative of Julian Gajdzicki. The name Gornik is Polish for miner, reflecting Zabrze's history as a coal-mining centre, and gives the nickname Gornicy (the Miners); the club is also called Trojkolorowi (the Tri-Colours) after its blue, white and red colours. Home matches are played at the Ernest Pohl Stadium, also known as Arena Zabrze, named after one of the club's great forwards.

Gornik have won 14 Polish championships, the joint second-highest total alongside Ruch Chorzow. They include a Polish record five in a row from 1963 to 1967 and four straight from 1985 to 1988. The club also won six Polish Cups up to 1972, including a record five consecutive from 1968, plus the 1978 League Cup and the 1988 Polish Super Cup. In Europe they reached the European Cup quarter-finals in 1968 and the 1970 Cup Winners' Cup final, losing 2-1 to Manchester City in Vienna. In May 2026 they beat Rakow Czestochowa 2-0 in the final at the National Stadium in Warsaw for a seventh Polish Cup, their first in 54 years.
