Overview

Espanyol in brief

Founded in Barcelona in 1900, Espanyol are one of Catalonia's oldest professional clubs and a founding member of La Liga. The blue-and-white side are widely known as the Periquitos and have maintained a distinct identity within the Barcelona metropolitan area. Since 2009 their home has been the RCDE Stadium, built between Cornella de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat after earlier eras at Sarria and Montjuic.

Espanyol have won the Copa del Rey four times and Spain's second tier twice. Their strongest cup traditions include victories in 1929, 1940, 2000 and 2006, while they also reached UEFA Cup finals in 1988 and 2007. Teams led by Javier Clemente and later Ernesto Valverde were noted for organisation, resilience and quick attacking transitions, traits that have often defined the club's best periods.
