Overview

Girona in brief

Girona FC were founded on 23 July 1930 at the Cafe Norat on La Rambla, after the city's strongest club, UD Girona, folded in 1929 under heavy debts. Albert de Quintana de Leon was the first president. Red and white vertical stripes have been worn since the foundation, giving the nickname Blanquivermells. In 1970 the club left Vista Alegre, its first ground, for the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi, opened on 14 August 1970 with a friendly against Barcelona.

For decades Girona moved between the second, third and fourth tiers. Back-to-back promotions in 2007 and 2008, the second as Segunda Division B group winners, ended a 49-year absence from the second tier. Under Pablo Machin they reached La Liga for the first time in 2017, the year City Football Group bought into the club. Promoted again through the 2022 play-offs, they finished third in 2023-24, played in the 2024-25 Champions League league phase and were relegated in 2026.
