Overview

Union Berlin in brief

Founded in 1966, Union Berlin represent Koepenick in the south-east of the German capital, while tracing their football lineage through earlier clubs from Oberschoeneweide. Known as Die Eisernen, or the Iron Ones, they wear red and white and retain a strong working-class identity. Their home is Stadion An der Alten Foersterei, opened in 1920 and substantially rebuilt with thousands of hours of voluntary labour from supporters.

Union's principal trophy is the 1968 FDGB-Pokal, won against Carl Zeiss Jena during the East German era. They later became the inaugural 3. Liga champions in 2008-09 and reached the DFB-Pokal final in 2001 as a third-tier club. Historically associated with resilience and collective organisation, Union climbed from the regional leagues to the Bundesliga and subsequently appeared in each of UEFA's three active men's club competitions.
