Overview

Cremonese in brief

Cremonese were founded on 24 March 1903 by a group of friends at the Varesina tavern on Piazza Sant'Angelo in Cremona, starting as a multi-sport club before football arrived in 1910. The first colours, white and lilac, gave way to grey and red around 1914, hence the nickname Grigiorossi. Home since 1919 has been the Stadio Giovanni Zini, named after the club's goalkeeper who died in the First World War.

Cremonese have played nine Serie A seasons, the first in 1929-30. Emiliano Mondonico led them to promotion in 1984, and in 1993 Gigi Simoni's side beat Derby County 3-1 at Wembley to win the Anglo-Italian Cup before going up to Serie A again. A return in 2022 ended 26 years out of the top flight, and a play-off final win over Spezia in 2025 brought another promotion, followed by relegation in 2026 after one season.
