Overview

Widzew Łódź in brief

Widzew Lodz are a football club from Lodz, named after Widzew, the district of the city where the club began. The club traces its roots to TMRF Widzew, the Society of Physical Development Enthusiasts, which a group of sports enthusiasts founded in 1910. After the First World War, former TMRF members reactivated the club in 1922 as RTS Widzew (the Workers' Sports Association). Widzew play in red, white and red, and are nicknamed Widzewiacy. Their home is the Stadion Miejski Widzewa Lodz, an 18,018-seat municipal ground on Pilsudskiego Avenue. It opened in 2017 and is known as the Heart of Lodz.

Widzew have won four Polish league titles, in 1980-81, 1981-82, 1995-96 and 1996-97, as well as the Polish Cup in 1985 and the Polish Super Cup in 1996. They went through the whole of the 1995-96 league season unbeaten. In Europe, Widzew knocked Manchester United and Juventus out of the 1980-81 UEFA Cup. Two seasons later they reached the semi-finals of the 1982-83 European Cup, beating Liverpool on the way before losing to Juventus. In 1996-97 they reached the Champions League group stage, and no other Polish club got that far for the next 20 years. The club went bankrupt in 2015 and restarted in the fifth tier. It returned to the Ekstraklasa in 2022.
