Overview

Istra 1961 in brief

Istra 1961 are a football club from Pula, the largest city on the Istrian peninsula. They trace their origins to NK Uljanik, founded in 1948 by the Uljanik shipyard. That club merged with NK Pula in 1961 to form NK Istra, and the present club was restarted under the Uljanik name in 1964. After spells as NK Pula 1856 and NK Pula, it took the name Istra 1961 in 2007. The change came after the Demoni supporters' group demanded a return to the city's traditional green and yellow. Nicknamed Zeleno-zuti (the Green-Yellows), the team play at Stadion Aldo Drosina in Pula.

Istra 1961 have not won a major national trophy, but they have reached two Croatian Football Cup finals. In 2003, as a second-tier side managed by Elvis Scoria, they lost 5-0 on aggregate to Hajduk Split. After winning their third-tier group in 2000-01 and the southern group of the second tier in 2003-04, followed by a promotion play-off, they played top-flight football for the first time in 2004-05. Relegated in 2007, they came back up as second-division champions in 2008-09 and have stayed in the top flight ever since. In 2021 they lost the cup final 6-3 to Dinamo Zagreb, and they also reached the semi-finals in 2014 and 2025.
