Overview
Rennes in brief
Founded in 1901 by a group of students, Rennes are one of the historic clubs of Brittany and were founding members of France's professional championship. Known as Les Rouge et Noir for their red and black colours, they have played beside the River Vilaine since 1912. The ground is now called Roazhon Park, using the Breton name for Rennes and reinforcing the club's regional identity.
Rennes have won the Coupe de France three times, in 1965, 1971 and 2019. Jean Prouff coached the first two winning sides, combining technical football with a strong Breton core, and the 1971 success was followed by the Trophee des Champions. The club have also won two second-division titles and a UEFA Intertoto Cup, while their cup tradition remains the clearest thread linking different successful eras.

The Henri Guerin training centre, known as La Piverdiere, established Rennes as one of France's best-known development clubs. Its academy has produced generations of internationals, including retired graduates Sylvain Wiltord and Yoann Gourcuff. Matches with Nantes are a leading expression of the Derby Breton. Prouff remains the defining coach, while Ivorian forward Laurent Pokou is remembered as one of the most gifted players to represent the Rouge et Noir.
