Overview
Start in brief
IK Start, in full Idrettsklubben Start, are a football club from Kristiansand on the south coast of Norway. The club was founded on 19 September 1905. Start play in yellow shirts with black shorts and socks, and their traditional badge is a blue and white pennant; an all-black modernised crest introduced in 2017 was dropped in 2022 in favour of the old design. Since 2007 the team have played at a purpose-built stadium at Torsvika in Kristiansand, opened as Sor Arena and later renamed Sparebanken Sor Arena. Since 2 May 2025 it has been called Sparebanken Norge Arena Kristiansand. Before 2007 Start played at Kristiansand Stadion.
Start have been Norwegian champions twice, in 1978 and 1980, and those titles took them into the European Cup in 1979-80 and 1981-82, where they went out in the first round to Strasbourg and AZ. Their furthest European run came in the 1977-78 UEFA Cup, when they beat Fram 8-0 on aggregate before losing to Eintracht Braunschweig in the second round. After winning the First Division in 2004, Start finished second in the top flight in 2005 and reached the first round of the 2006-07 UEFA Cup, losing to Ajax. They won the First Division again in 2012, reached Norwegian Football Cup semi-finals in 2006, 2011 and 2018, and returned to the Eliteserien for 2026 after finishing second in the 2025 First Division.

Karsten Johannessen is the figure most closely tied to the club's best years: he coached Start in several spells between 1954 and 1996, including the title-winning seasons of 1978 and 1980. Other coaches have included Tor Roste Fossen, who preceded him in the late 1970s, former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Steve Perryman in 1995, Tom Nordlie, who led the 2004 promotion and the 2005 runners-up finish, Stig Inge Bjornebye and Kjetil Rekdal. Less happily, between July 2015 and September 2016 Start went 39 top-flight matches without a win, which was reported as the longest winless run in any European top division.
