Overview
Aalesund in brief
Aalesunds Fotballklubb, usually known as Aalesund or AaFK, is a football club from the coastal town of Alesund in western Norway. The club was founded on 25 June 1914, and its name keeps the older Aalesund spelling of the town. The team play in orange and blue, which gives them the nicknames De oransje og bla (the orange and blue) and Tangotroyene, the tango shirts. After playing at Kramyra Stadion, Aalesund moved in 2005 to Color Line Stadion, which holds 10,778 and is named after the ferry operator Color Line.
Aalesund reached the Norwegian top flight for the first time in 2003 and have since moved often between the top two divisions, with their longest top-flight spell running from 2007 to 2017. Their major honours are two Norwegian Football Cups: in 2009 they beat regional rivals Molde in the final, and in 2011 they beat Brann. Their best league finish is fourth, in 2010 and 2013. They won the second-tier 1. divisjon in 2019, and they finished fourth in the 2025 1. divisjon and returned to Eliteserien for 2026 through the promotion play-offs. Their best European run came in the 2011-12 Europa League, when they knocked out Neath, Ferencvaros and Elfsborg before losing to AZ in the play-off round.

Aalesund's main rivalry is with Molde, a regional contest between the Sunnmore and Romsdal districts of the same county. Hodd are the other traditional regional rivals, though the clubs have rarely shared a division in recent years, while newer rivalries have grown with Stromsgodset and, to a lesser extent, Brann. Supporters have friendly ties with Valerenga. Notable coaches include Egil Olsen, who had a spell in charge in 1989, Kjetil Rekdal, who led the club to both cup wins, and Lars Bohinen, who oversaw the 2019 second-tier title.
