Overview

Sheffield Utd in brief

Founded in 1889 as an offshoot of Sheffield United Cricket Club, Sheffield United play at Bramall Lane, a ground opened for cricket in 1855 and often described as the oldest major football stadium in the world still in use. It also staged the world's first floodlit football match, in 1878. Known as the Blades, a nickname linked to Sheffield's cutlery trade, the club wear red-and-white striped shirts with black shorts.

United were champions of England in 1897-98 and won the FA Cup four times, in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925, during an era when they were among the country's strongest sides. Later league titles include the Second Division in 1952-53, the Fourth Division in 1981-82 and League One in 2016-17, making them one of only a handful of clubs to have won a championship in each of England's four professional divisions. They were founder members of the Premier League in 1992, and Brian Deane scored the competition's first goal for them.
